Capital Metro Rail From North Austin is a Breeze

By jmorelli • September 10th, 2010

I recently decided that it was time to go check out the new Capital Metro Rail Service. Since I live and work in the North Austin area I decided to pick up the train in North Austin at the Howard Lane station and ride it downtown and back.

I arrived at the station about 15 minutes before my departure and found the parking lot to be about 25% full and easy to navigate.

As I was parking I noticed the train was waiting and my first though was that I was going to miss it. Much to my delight, I found that the 5:15pm south bound train originates at Howard Lane. This easily left me time to purchase a ticket from the conveniently located ticket machine. Once on board I found the train to be clean and comfortable.

As we made our way south it became obvious to me that people are actually using the train and many of the passengers were traveling with bicycles, which are easy to store on the train. In fact, by the time we left the Crestview station the bike racks were full.

All in all, the ride was really pleasant and the only negative thing I could say was that I found it odd that both times when I reached the Kramer station there was not one mention of the fact that one could transfer there for the connector bus servicing The Domain, National Instruments, IBM, J.J. Pickle and other stops on the 466 route.

I hope more people become familiar with this wonderful system and use it. For those who live in North Austin and travel downtown for work this is a great way to commute. After this pleasant experience I am going to take another ride from the Howard station north to the end of the line. When I do I will be sure to post my findings.
